SPRING STEELHEAD AND SALMON

MARCH 15 - JUNE 01

During this time period we fish many different coastal streams as well as the Copper, Kalum, Kitimat and main stem of the Skeena River. The Steelhead and Trout fishing is great from the beginning, and by early May the Spring Salmon (Kings) are in many of the larger rivers. Spring Steelhead and Trout can be found in literally hundreds of small rivers and streams all along coastal British Columbia. These streams generally have less than twenty miles of flow from source to sea. It is very common for Spey Lodge guests to find themselves exploring two or three of these remarkable little fisheries on the same day, via jet boat or whitewater raft. Hooking a small stream Steelhead on a single-handed rod 100 yards upstream from the ocean is incredible; and should be experienced by all!

Late March can see a small run of wild spring Steelhead in the Copper River, which can be untouchable when timed right. This fishing can go until late April. Although only the bottom section of the Copper is open to fishing in the spring there are plenty of fly friendly pools to fish. Floating this river can make for an amazing day just minutes from the Lodge. The Copper is renown for being one of the nicest flyfishing rivers with some of the most aggressive Steelhead on the Planet! It's almost like flyfishing was designed around the Copper because they fit so well J The Copper has limited guiding allocation, allowing only 4 guides to operate on it.

The Kitimat River is not a tributary of the Skeena River. It is it's own watershed flowing directly into the Douglas Channel, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean. April & May are the months to be on this river. With close to 30 miles of river to float this river is very diverse from one area to the other. The Steelhead run peaks from late April to early May. These fish are strong and can often reach the 35-40 inch ranges in length (20+lbs). An incredible river for the fly, you can often find undisturbed fish in water shallower than 2 feet. Pound for pound these fish are some of the strongest on the coast.

The Lower Skeena River can be an amazing place to be in early spring. April seems to be the month that when timed right can produce some amazing fishing. This area of the Skeena was named as one of the top 5 areas in BC for incredible scenery. Nothing seems more attractive than fishing this large river in search of the unknown, what you may possibly encounter during April & May. This place is full of life with different runs of fish coming through heading to different tributaries including the odd early Chinook. While fishing for Steelhead one season a guest of ours hooked a chrome 18lb Chinook Salmon on the 27th of April. Like the other rivers mentioned the Trout (Dolly Varden & Sea-Run Cutthroat) are gorging on Salmon fry hatching as water temperatures warm up. Skating streamers on the surface imitates injured salmon fry waiting to be targeted by Trout reaching 3-4lbs. This alone can make for a great day of fishing in one of the last true paradises bearing wild fish
